IT ALL boils down to heart.

U.S.-based coach Ronel Leuterio, who will try to steer The Royal Mandaya Hotel-City Mayor's Office (TRMH-CMO) to another championship as the 2014 Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte Kadayawan Invitational Basketball League kicks off on August 18 at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center, said his team will be very competitive.

Leuterio, who arrived a month ago having been commissioned by TRMH-CMO owner Glen Escandor to mentor the team for the annual Kadayawan cagefest, said: "I can't say mag champion kami but I can guarantee you a team that will play its hearts out to the last second."

TRMH-CMO, managed by Mayor Rody Duterte's executive assistant Christopher "Bong" Go, has yet to complete its roster.

"Wala pang final line-up. We are still waiting for the PBA players to get their permissions. May dalawang available slots pa kami," Leuterio said in text interview with Sun.Star Davao Friday.

He, however, said veteran PBA player John Ferriols, Eman Calo of Cebu City, Hercules "Jojo" Tangkay, Dino Daa, Jose Maria College standout Jumabon Bulac and Lyndon Gudez are already part of the team.

Leuterio, in an earlier conversation, said he is not really after the individual talents or star qualities of the players. "Mas gugustuhin ko talaga yung makakapaglaro as a team. Maganda rin sana kung may Davao color yung team. Iba na syempre yung may taga-Davao na maglalaro," he said.

He's happy that Ferriols is back and that Bulac has decided to join them this time. The latter played for Goldstar Hardware during the Araw ng Dabaw tournament last March.

Also seeing action in the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP)-sanctioned tournament are MP Pacman of General Santos City, Goldstar Hardware and Montaña Pawnshop.

The champion team will receive a cash prize of P100,000 while the next three placers will claim P60,000, P40,000 and P30,000.

The most valuable player (MVP) will get P5,000 and a trophy.

Meanwhile, Kadayawan Inter-Collegiate Basketball Championship men's games will serve as preliminaries for the commercial league. The women’s even will be held on Aug. 25 to September 2.

Winners will also receive cash prizes.

The two basketball meets are presented by the city government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office.
