Open volleyfest underway

MEN'S and women's spikers take centerstage as the Philippine Volleyball Federation-sanctioned 1st Abreeza Kadayawan Open Volleyball Tournament gets underway at 3 p.m. today, August 9, at the Abreeza Mall Open Parking Lot.

Organizer and Balibolista de Dabaw Abet Bernan, who guested in Thursday's edition of the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the NCCC Mall B3 Center, said 11 teams are seeing action in the tournament.

"Since this is the annual celebration of the Kadayawan Festival, Balibolista de Dabaw engaged a partnership with the host venue to commemorate the blessing of the festival through sports," Bernan said.


Bernan, for his part, said holding the event will enforce their advocacy to inspire and to teach the younger generations to get into active sports.

Teams entered are Ateneo de Davao University (Addu), Cor Jesu College, Holy Cross of Davao College, University of Mindanao(UM), DMMA College of Southern Philippines, Jose Maria College(JMC), RCube Construction, Philippine National Police(PNP), Davao Optima, Philippine Women's College (PWC) and Megatesting Center-DGL.

Teams will be divided into two groups and will play a single round-robin format in the group eliminations.

Cash prizes await winners with the champion team receiving P10,000 as the next three placers will get P8,000, P6,000, and P3,000. A consolation prize of P1,000 will awarded to the eliminated teams.

Licensed national referees from PVF and Balibolista de Dabaw members will handle the technical side of the competition.

Bernan also bared that a special photo competition will spice up the tournament.

"Ang mangyayari sa photo competition ay kailangan magsubmit ng photographers form different media mediums ng published action shot na kinunan during the tournament at kung sino man ang mapili na manalo ay makakatanggap siya ng special prize," Bernan said. (KRP)
