THE Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte 29th Kadayawan Open Chess Tournament and Age Group Chess Championship
will get underway on August 15 and 16, respectively, at the NCCC Mall Food Cove function hall.

Organizer and chief arbiter Alfred Moulic bared this during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the NCCC Mall B3 Center yesterday.

A total of 100 chessers are expected to vie for the top honors in the both tournaments sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).

"Last year umabot ng almost 80 participants ang sumali sa tournament kaya naman if this year aabot ng 100 participants, tataasan namin ng konti ang prizes ng mga winners," Moulic said.

The age-group event will follow a six-round Swiss system format that features boys and girls 10-under, 15-under and 20-under categories.
The open division format, however, will depend on the number of registrants.

Moulic said, "The 15-under category will be exclusive for Dabawenyos in which the top three chessers will qualify for the Batang Pinoy competition sometime in September."

The winner will take home P1,000 while the second and third placers will receive P750 and P500, respectively. Trophies and medals will also be given to the top three chessers.

Siblings Irish Yngayo, Lorraine Yngayo, and Eric Yngayo of Davao Central College, Zsuzsa Tabudlong of Davao Wisdom College, and Florence Faith Guevarra will be seeing action in the said tournament.

The open tournament will also follow the six-round Swiss tournament format. Registration fees are P200 (standard) and P100 (kiddie).

Cash prizes of P4,000, P2,000, P1,000, and P500 will be awarded to the first four winners. They will also receive trophies and medals.

The best kiddie player and best female and junior players will each claim P500.

Moulic added, "Okay din if magsali yung mga bata sa open chess tournament para at least makakuha na sila ng exposure prior to their competition."

Moulic, meanwhile, urged players to join and register for these two tournaments in celebration of the Kadayawan Festival.

NCFP regional director James Infiesto and national master Macacuna Macala will compete in the open event.

The two chess tournaments are sponsored by the city government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office.
