TEN teams will vie for honors as the Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF)-sanctioned 12th Season of the Shakey's Girls Volleyball League (SGVL) Southern Mindanao-leg that will unfurl on August 11 to 14 at the Davao Doctors College Gym.
Defending champion Ateneo de Davao University (Addu), Batang Pinoy reigning champion Tagum City National High School (TCNHS), Maa National High School, University of the Immaculate of Conception (UIC), Cor Jesu College High School (Digos), Holy Cross College of Sasa, Notre Dame of Cotabato, Koronadal National Comprehensive High School, Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School, and Davao City National High School (TCNHS) will play a single round robin in the eliminations.
Organizer and Balibolista de Dabaw Abet Bernan, who guested in the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the NCCC Mall B3 Center yesterday, said the event was organized to promote the sport among High School girls.
"It's the advocacy of Metro Sports, the main sport promoter of volleyball in the Philippines, to inspire and teach the younger generations to get into active lifestyle through sports," Bernan said.
The champion will represent the region to the SGVL 12 League of Champions slated January 18 to 23 next year at the Ynares Sports Arena, Pasig City.
The regional winner, however, will face tough battle against Regional Champions from Northern Mindanao, Western Visayas, Central and Eastern Visayas, Northern, Central, and Southern Luzon, and National Capital Region (NCR) plus foreign teams from United States of America (USA), Australia, New Zealand, and Bangladesh.
Bernan said,"The leg aims to cater to more talented roster of volleyball players from Mindanao."
New changes have been implemented in the format of the SGVL tournament in which each team can line up two guest players given that players were born not before 1997.
Addu, which represented Mindanao in last year's nations, placed 6th overall. (KRP)
