DIFFERENT martial arts styles will be showcased when the Smokers fight-organized 2014 Mindanao Martial Arts Expo will kick off at 8 a.m. on August 10, Saturday, at the Garden Oases Convention Center, Davao City.

Smokers Fights MMA Promotions founder and Kinasang'an Foundation Inc. deputy executive director Dr. Vincent Rey Vicente, who guested along with Nell Jone Astudillo of King's Sword Martial arts, Fraz Pasquil of Empire Boxing Davao, Marco Cenojas of CMMA, and JM Jocom of Computersense Health Care Services during Thursday' Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at NCCC Mall B3 Center, said the expo will feature Muay Thai, kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, judo, and Crossfit Challenge.

Vicente said, "We wanted to conduct more fights during the event but sad to say we are limited on our funding so we opted to present matches in mix martial arts event in the evening."

Seven MMA matches will be featured as well as three Brazilian Jiu-jitsu matches and two kickboxing bouts.
Pasquil, for his part, bared that Empire Boxing Davao will launch a BassconXtreme Challenge reserved for all interested guests on the day of the event.

"The challenge would be more into the training aspect as participants will have to go through series of exercises that include sit-ups, push-ups, punching, and kicking," Pasquil added.

He added that these exercises are usually done by pro fighters to improve their conditioning, thus, making it more challenging.

Participants who will finish the said challenge will receive a free t-shirt and a free boxing session.

Empire Boxing Davao also organized a main event bout that will pit Dennis Quinonero of 125 CMMA gym against Panabo's Junior Diapolet of 125 Fernan.

Astudillo, meanwhile, pledged his support to the expo by organizing the 1st Davao City Weapons Kata and Board Breaking Competition that is presented by American Bushido-Kai Karate Association Philippines.

"It's my own way of promoting MMA in Davao City," Astudillo said.

The weapons competition features kids, teens and adults; beginners and advanced categories. A registration fee of P25 and P50 will be collected, respectively.

It will also showcase different forms of kata or weapon such as tonfa, sai, katana, long stick, and arnis.

Astudillo said, "This competition will not only be for fun but at the same time educational for the participants."

Cenojas' CMMA, on the other hand, organized the Mindanao Open Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and No-GI Grappling challenge in cooperation with Smokers Fight Davao.

Vicente said, "Physicality is to be expected between fighters in each event."

He, however, assured all fighters and guests of different MMA events that efficient referees will handle the matches to ensure the safety of players.

Cenojas added, "In the history of the MMA in Mindanao, no fatality case has been yet recorded and every fighter who is et to participate in a match is qualified and well-trained for a match."

Vicente, meanwhile, also stressed that MMA is a discipline and a sport that should be accorded with great respect and understanding.

Admission fees for the event are P100 (whole day access), P150 (MMA event) and P500 (VIP seats for MMA event).
