A TOTAL of 63 tankers plunged into action as the 1st All-Ateneo Swimming Championships opened yesterday at Fr. Rodolfo Malasmas, S.J. Swimming Pool, Ateneo de Davao University-Matina Campus.

Addu swimming coach and Aquatics program head Rose Rodriguez, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao, said they're thankful for the presence of tankers from sister schools Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) Eagles and Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan (XU) Crusaders.

"Although hindi namin naabot ang expected number ng participants of 72, it's okay kasi naachieve naman naming ihost itong ground-breaking competition dito sa Davao City,"Rodriguez said.

Admu Coach Archie Lim, for his part, said their participation in the event serves as a training ground and preparation for them when they compete in UAAP in September.

With a total delegation of 30 (15 men and 15 women tankers), Coach Lim believes they have strong chances of dominating the swimfest.
"Even before pa naman nagstart ang competition, alam na namin na hindi talaga strong yung kalaban namin especially nga na bago palang nabuo yung teams ng Addu," Coach Lim said.

He, however, said their participation in the competition is not about winning instead they think of it as an exposure for the swimmers to be mentally and physically ready for the next competition.

XU coaches Mark and Jackie Neri, for their part, said that since it's their first time to join in this kind of competition, they are not aiming for the championship.

"Meron kaming ten swimmers na sasali for this competition and I'm expecting it would be a fun experience for them to compete and at the same time share their time with fellow Ateneans," both coaches added.

Addu coach Imelda Ribble, on the other hand, admitted that they're not physically prepared for this event due to lack of time for practice and preparation.

All tankers are entered in individual and team events as of presstime yesterday.

The swimming competition was organized by the Addu Office of Athletics in coordination with Addu Aquatics. It was sponsored by L.V. Ledesma, Inc., Evson Construction, Inc., Altess Metals, and Coastland Swimming Team. (KRP)
