MAYOR Rody Duterte Cycling Team member Eric Dhave Apinar finished seventh overall in the recently-concluded 23-under category of the Velodrome Cycling Challenge at Amoranto Sports Complex in Quezon City, Tuesday.
Apinar, in a phone interview with Sun.Star Davao, said his ranking was based on his performances in 1K time trial and pursuit categories.
"Sa unang set ng race medyo nag-aadjust pa ako kasi hindi talaga ako sanay sa fixed geared bike kaya nakuha ko 12th spot. From the original na 47 participants, 30 nalang kaming naka-qualify for the second set at para makuha yung seventh place achievement na yun lalo na beginner pa ako sa Velodrome," Apinar recalled.
He also said he had difficulty in the race, saying, "Sa start pa langsa race murag malipong nko ug kasukahon kay patuyok-tuyok ang track (Even at the start of the race, I already felt dizzy and I felt like vomiting because of the circular track)."
Cyclist Armel de Jesus emerged as 23-under champion Archie Cardana and Juse Alwyn Tumalad settled for silver and bronze, respectively.
De Jesus and Cardana are members of the Velodrome National team while Tumalad is a rider from Jack Motors.
"Makita gyud ni mo na professional bikers na sila daan so wala nako natingala na sila ang mga nakakuha sa top three (All three of them are professional bikers in Velodrome so I already expected them to make it among the top three)" he added.
Apinar, however, vowed to compete again in next year's Velodrome competition.
He said, "Kelangan lang gyud nako mag-practice ug fixed geared bikes ug ing-ani na tracks para masanay ko (I need to practice more with fixed geared bikes and circular tracks to be comfortable)."
PhilCycling secretary-general for Mindanao Salvador "Jun" Paholio, in a separate phone interview, said he's satisfied with Apinar's showing.
"Proud nako sa iyaha kay bisan dili pa kaayo siya anad sa Velodrome naka place pa siya (I'm proud of him that he was able to grab the seventh place being a beginner at Velodrome)," Paholio added. (KRP)
