LOUD Cheers from the spectators and tight hugs were exchanged on the court as underdog Purple squad cruised past the top-seeded Yellow, 47-40, to capture the championship title of the Davao City Foursquare Gospel Church Basketball Tournament at the Montaña gymanisium over the weekend.
Inspired by the return of ace guard Dodong Abanes from a two-game absence, the Purple team unleashed its offensive weapons against an experienced Yellow team.
Bonbon Baliong fired 18 points as Abanes added 11 points and issued six assists. Abay Solis made 10 to help Purple notch its first title in two seasons.
Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC) Bulldogs player Abanes, in a post-game interview, said, "Happy ko na naka-contribute ko sa team para makadaog mi karon sa championship (I'm very happy that I was able to help the team win the championship)."
Purple and Yellow teams started the game sluggishly as both teams combined to shoot one out of 28 attempts leading to a disastrous 3-2 score at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams then tightened their defense on both ends of the floor. Purple's
Solis put up a solid defense, limiting Yellow shotmaker Rey Lara to just five points.
Yellow's big man Rex Devera and team captain Joshua Noriega also struggled with eight and six points, respectively, at the end of the game.
Yellow team was forced to dispatch a three big man combo of Chris Rivero, De Vera, and Marlo Boholst in the final period but was foiled by Purple's quicker small guards.
Meanwhile, Red toppled Blue, 49-38, to grab the third spot.
The Davao City Foursquare Gospel Church Tournament was sponsored by Columbia Computers, Bend N'Peel, and SDD-Autohub. (KRP)
