MAYOR Rodrigo Duterte Cycling Team member Eric Dave Apinar will be the lone Davao City rider in the 23-under category of the Velodrome Cycling Challenge 23-under slated Saturday and Sunday at the Amoranto Sports Complex in Quezon City.
Apinar, who guested at the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the NCCC Mall B3 Center yesterday, said he's happy and proud having been chosen by PhilCycling secretary-general for Mindanao Salvador "Jun" Paholio to represent the city to the bikefest.
"Happy ug surprised gyud kaayo ko kay ako ang napili ni sir Jun na muadto sa Manila. Giingnan ko niya na ang gibasehan niya kay akong standing sa mga past competitions na akong gipang-apilan (I'm very happy and surprised that I was chosen by Sir Jun to compete in Manila. He told me that my standings in past competitions were his basis to pick me)," Apinar said.
Apinar, who recently nabbed the juniors title of the T'Nalak Mountain bike Challege, said that it will be his second stint in the competition.
"Kadtong first time nako niapil, naglisod ko ug adjust kay fixed gear na mga bikes ang ginagamit pero karon i-try nako ang akong best para makuha ang qualifying spot (When I joined the competition for the first time, I had a hard time adjusting especially when using the fixed gear type of bikes that's why I lost. But this time I will do my best to at least earn a qualifying berth)," Apinar said.
But the Dabawenyo rider said he's still uncomfortable and inexperienced in using fixed geared bikes.
He added, "Same langang preparation sa usual bike akong ginabuhat karon bisan lahi akong gamiton na bike didto (I had no adjustments at all. I still follow the usual training and preparation even if I will use a fixed geared bike in the competition)."
Paholio, in separate phone interview, said he's confident that Apinar will do well in the competition.
Eric, meanwhile, thanked Paholio for believing in his capabilities as a rider. (KRP)
