Monday, July 21, 2014
YELLOW arranged a titular showdown with Purple after beating their semi-final rivals in the Davao City Foursquare Gospel Church Basketball Tournament at Montaña Gym Sunday.
Joshua Noriega sank crucial free throws in the closing minutes of the game as the top-seeded Yellow hacked out a 67-62 victory over Red. He scattered 17 points and issued six assists to lead Yellow's charge while Chris Rivero and Marlo Boholst added 11 points apiece.
It was an evenly played match for both teams as they started the game shooting 80 percent from the field.
Red paced Yellow, 20-19, at the end of the first period. Yellow's leading scorer and three-point specialist Rey Lara injured his right knee after colliding with a Red defender while on a rebound attempt during the second canto. Red's ArielGulpe capitalized on Yellow's setback as he buried two consecutive three pointers to further push the lead to five points, 28-23.
Lara checked in barely seven minutes and 30 seconds left in the quarter and managed to get the ball to Rivero inside the paint. Yellow then snatched a 31-28 lead at the break.
Red, however, grabbed a 40-38 advantage behind John Pegarro's back-to-back treys. As Yellow's woes continued, Red's Eric Morales led a 5-0 run capped by his three-point play to pull ahead with five points, 46-41.
But Yellow used the three big man combo of Boholst, Devera, and Rivero to exploit Red's small line-up.
Noriega's charity throws then sealed the game.
Morales topscored for Red with 20 points as teammates Kobe Caballero and CristianChuim made identical 11 points.
The sudden death finals match is set Sunday. (KRP)
