DIGOS CITY, Davao del Sur - John Paul Bentoso and Dhan Ariel Adolfo of Pacman-Digos beat their respective rivals to advance to the next round of the PLDT-Abap National Amateur Boxing Championships at the Digos City Gym here late Wednesday afternoon.

Adolfo, who hails from Barangay San Miguel in Digos, unleashed powerful combinations in the second and third rounds to force a split decision win over Rovemil Son Dakila of General Santos City in their school boys paperweight division.

Dakila started out aggressive in the first round by consistently attacking the defense of Adolfo with jabs and hooks. But Adolfo's coach Renato Moreno reminded him to also counter-punch his opponent.

"Nag-alanganin pa siya sa first round kay siguro nakulbaan pero ako siya giingnan na dapat siya magfocus kay dili kaayo kusog ang kalaban (Maybe he was tense during the first round but I told him that he can win by regaining his focus)," Moreno said.

The 14-year-old Adolfo said he used a strategy inside the ring to try and break Dakila's defense.

"Nagpakawala ko ug mga jabs ug straights so mao to effective siya naguba na iyang depensa sa sunod na rounds (I used combinations of jabs and straights. It turned out effective in breaking his defense in the last two rounds)," Adolfo said.

Bentoso, meanwhile, foiled the title hopes of Cresan Paul Dicamos of Bago, Negros Occidental as the latter was beaten in the youth boys lightweight quarter-finals via unanimous decision.

"Gitarong gyud nako na mudaog aron makatabang ko sa akong mama ug papa na maguuma lang (I gave my best to win this fight in order to help my parents who are farmers)," he said.

The Rosario, Agusan del Sur native said he's been in the amateur boxing for almost two years already under Pacman-Digos Team. "I want to be the next Manny Pacquiao that's why I'm training so hard right now," he said.
Cash prizes await medalists of the five-day event sponsored by Sarangani Cong. Manny Pacquiao who was around to grace the opening rites.

In other results, Zamboanga native Rennieboy Perraren defeated Sergio Villagonzalo of Sultan Kudarat via unanimous decision while J Mar Jaga of Bago City dominated Nenito Anislag of Cagayan de Oro City on the same note in school boys paperweight division.

Marco Pomar of Cebu stole the spotlight as he scored a technical knockout win against Danny Boy Tan of La Union even as JayR Arcilla of Mandaluyong City subdued Bonnie Lamberte of Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat in unanimous decision in youth boys light flyweight division. Jonjie Maritana of Tayabas, Quezon also earned a unanimous decision victory over Shaquel Miole in the junior boys pinweight division.
