Dimakiling draws, wins

DAVAO City-born international master (IM) Oliver Dimakiling halved a point with grand master (GM) Richard Bitoon in the seventh round of the 2014 National Championships "Battle of Grandmasters" Open at the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) athletes' dining hall yesterday.

Dimakiling grabbed his first victory at the expense of national master (NM) Roel Abelgas in the sixth round late Wednesday afternoon.

The third-seeded Dabawenyo ace, thus, shared the sixth to eighth places with GMs Darwin Laylo and Rogelio Barcenilla as each posted similar 3.5 points in the 11-round Swiss System format competition organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.


Second-seeded GM John Paul Gomez stayed on top with five points followed by 4.5 scorers WFM Janelle Mae Frayna, GM Eugenio Torre and IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia in second to fourth places, respectively.

Top-seeded FM Paulo Bersamina was at sixth place with four points while GM Rogelio Antonio, Jr. occupied the ninth spot with three points.
Trailing behind were two-pointers NM Roel Abelgas, GM Richard Bitoon and IM Joel Pimental.

Dimakiling of Sasa was still playing Pimentel as of this writing. He will play Antonio tomorrow.

In the distaff side, woman national master (WNM) Christy Lamiel Bernales paced with 5.5 points while WFM Cherry Ann Mejia (5.0) and WIM Catherine Perena (4.5) took the next two spots.
