Trangia tops S.I.R chess

JIMZON Trangia emerged as champion in the chess tournament that was held Sunday at the S.I.R. Barangay Hall in celebration of the 77th Araw ng Barangay S.I.R 76-A, Bucana District held last June 22, 2014, Sunday at the S.I.R Barangay Hall.

The Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) varsity student stamped his rivals in the six-round chessfest to pocket the P5,000 top prize.

Richard Togonon placed second to claim P3,000 while Jake Milagrosa, Tasheen Saludsong, and Magesh Piquinto shared for third and the P2,000 cash prize.


Newly-elected Barangay S.I.R. 76-A Chess Club president Marlon Flores, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao, said they proceeded to the election of officers after the tournament.

“This chess club would serves as a training ground for aspiring chess grand master here in our district especially now that we are planning to create small tournaments every month,” Flores added.

The club plans to conduct free trainings for kids every first Sunday of the month to further develop their skills and scout new talents.

The rest of the officers: Jaime Bacorro (vice president), Arnold Placencia (secretary), Richard Togonon (treasurer), Carlos Amor (assistant treasurer), Harrison Maamo (Auditor), Janex Blanco, Marlou Ponteras, and Alex Clavete (PIO), and Eloy Galagar (Sgt. at arms).

The advisers for the club are Barangay Captain Rolando Trajera and Secretary Pedro Maamo.

Flores thanked National Chess Federation of the Philippines regional director James Infiesto for his support in providing them chess boards and chess clocks. (KRP)
