DEFENDING champion Lee Vann Corteza of the Philippines lost his quarter-finals match to Chinese Taipei's Yu Lung Chang, 8-11, who went on to win the 2014 WPA 9-Ball China Open title at Pudong Yuanshen Stadium in Pudong, Shanghai, China Sunday.

Chang edged Filipino Jeffrey Ignacio, 11-9, in their championship clash to pocket $40,000 while the latter settled for $20,000.

Chang bested Rong Lin Chang, 11-4, while Ignacio subdued compatriot Carlo Biado, 11-6, in their respective-semi-finals matches. Yu Lung also demolished Bing Jie Chu of China, 11-6, in the Last 16 after routing Mateusz Sniegocki, 11-5, in the Last 32.

Ignacio, for his part, upset Mika Immonen of Finland, 11-6, in the quarter-finals on the heels of defeating Canada player John Morra (11-8) and Karol Skowerski (11-8) in the last two rounds.

Rong-Lin and Biado each received $10,000 while Corteza along with other losing quarter-finalists Thorsten Hohmann of Germany, Immonen and Shane Van Boening of the USA.

In the women's side, Rubilen Amit of the Philippines bowed to Yu Han of China, 7-9, to take home $4,500 along with other quarters losers Kelly Fisher, Akimi Kajatani and Pan Xiaoting.

Yu Han emerged champion by eking out a 9-5 win over Ga Young Kim of South Korea to bag the $32,000 top purse. Han stunned fellow Chinese and defending champion Shasha Liu, 9-4, while Kim edged Siming Chen, 9-7, in the semis.

Sanctioning World Pool Association (WPA) will soon come out with its new world rankings for men and women following the China Open results.

Hohmann, Corteza and Biado were the current top three men's players in WPA but Biado may improve his standing with a better finish over Hohmann and Corteza in Shanghai. (MLS)
