Talomo wins Tanduay cagefest

BARANGAY TALOMO emerged champion after defeating Barangay 76-A Bucana, 53-49 in the final of the 1st Tanduay 5 on 5 Paliga Basketball Tournament Battle of the Champions held Saturday evening at Davao City Recreation Center-Almendras Gym.

Barangay Bucana finished the opening frame game with a nine-point lead against Talomo, 20-11. Bucana continued to defend well, but Talomo was catching up, narrowing the gap to four points by half time, with the scores at 30-26.

The Jaime Revilla-coached Talomo, however, clawed their way back into the game during the third quarter, building a five-point lead over their rivals and heading into the final frame at 45-40.


Emotions were high as Talomo and Bucana tied at 49 points in the final quarter, but the last two shots of Gyrann Mendoza and Jan Juegos, seconds before the end of the final half, sealed Talomo’s victory.

In an interview with Sun.Star Davao, coach Jaime of barangay Talomo said, “Dako kayo ang among kalipay. Naswertehan lang gyud mi kay buenas ang dinulaan sa mga players. (We are very happy. We are just lucky enough to win with the help of the players.)”
He said that they will donate half of their winning prize to the youth community in their barangay and the other half will be divided among the players.

Barangay captain Artemio Jimenez of Talomo meanwhile thanked all the people who supported them in the league, “Lahat magagaling. Sinwerte lang talaga kami perosigurado kami na sa simula pa lang, makakapasok kami sa championship round.”

Talomo pocketed the champion’s prize of P7,000 plus a trophy while second place Bucana received P3,000 and a trophy.

The Mythical Five were Bucana’s Alvin Calatayud, Clemente Ruiz, JericoAmatosa, and Talomo’s Lester Revilla and Mendoza.

Mendoza was also awarded as the most valuable player (MVP) while the best coach award went to coach Jaime of Talomo.

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) sanctioned cagefest was presented by Tanduay Distillers, Inc. and organized by Rael Diaz.
