Corteza recovers from loser's bracket

DEFENDING champion Lee Vann Corteza of Davao City climbed back from the loser's bracket to enter the Last 32 round, keeping his title-retention bid hopes alive in the 2014 WPA 9-Ball China Open at the PudongYuanshen Stadium in Pudong, Shanghai, China Friday.

The second-seeded Corteza lost to Liu Haitao, 6-9, in their Group H winner's bracket match to be relegated to the loser's side. But 34-year-old "The Slayer" Corteza of Negros Billiards Stable recovered by beating Dai Yong of China, 9-6.

Corteza, ranked No. 2 in the World Pool Association in men's rankings, was set to play against Khan Hoang Nguyen of Vietnam, a 9-6 winner over Jeremy Sossei of the USA, in the race-to-11 Last 32 as of yesterday presstime.


Filipinos Dennis Orcollo, Johann Gonzales Chua, Carlo Biado and Jeffrey Ignacio also made it to the men's Last 32.

Orcollo of Bislig, Surigaodel Sur bested Ralf Souquet of Germany, 9-4, in Group F winner's side while Chua defeated Matthew Edwards of New Zealand, 9-2, and Sossei, 9-6, in Group D loser's group.

Orcollo takes on Rodney Morris of the USA while Chua clashes against Daryl Peach of Great Britain.

Third-seeded Biado, for his part, defeated Mohammad Hassan Al Hosaini of Brunei in their Group E second round collision to play Phil Reilly of Australia in the knockout stage. The latter stayed alive by surviving a 9-8 thriller over Alejandro Carvajal of Chile.

Ignacio subdued compatriot Warren Kiamco of Cebu City, 9-7, in Group C loser's side to remain in contention for the $40,000 men's champion purse. Ignacio battles Karol Skowerski of Poland in the Last 32.

In the women's event, third-seeded RubilenAmit of the Philippines advanced to the Last 16. She crushed Kajitani Akimi of Japan, 7-2, before routing another Japanese Kawahara Chihiro, 7-3, in Group E winner's side.
