Urdaneta heads to Asean Mountain Bike Cup

DAVAO CITY'S Ronnie Urdaneta will compete in the 1st Asean Mountain Bike (MTB) Cup on June 13 to 15 at Danao, Cebu.

Urdaneta, who recently won the 1st Ciudades 24-kilometer bike festival will battle in the cross country men’s open against cyclists from Southeast Asia.

The 22-year-old cyclist told Sun.Star Davao that he has been preparing for the competition and will do his best to represent Davao City.


“Wala man ko nag expect ug too much. Ensayo lang gyud ko pirmi kay mao mana ang sikreto sa mga athletes, (I don’t expect too much from the game. I just practice daily.)”

In vernacular Urdaneta said, “I think the riders from Manila, Cebu and Butuan will be my closest rivals but I will do my best. I trust in the Lord and I am competing with no one but myself.”

Davao XC/Mumho Riders president and Ciuades Bike Festival co-organizer Ferdie James Nervida meanwhile said in a text message that he believes in the skills of the young athlete and despite not having any group, they will support him.

“Walang grupo si Ronnie pero isa siya sa pinaka-magaling na riders’ dito sa Davao City. In fact, sa pagtutulungan ng mga riders, sinuportahan siya ng Ridea Shop, a Barney’s Bikes, Tank Cycles, Woodman Components at Panzer Bikes dahil sa galing niya. I hope we could also help him. He is asking the support of the Dabawenyos as he represents the city in the event,” Nervida said.

Urdaneta will ride with his Tank X Race Slu-Ud Full Carbon in his bid for the international cycling competition.

Cross country and downhill events will be contested in the international race.

Categories entered in the cross-country are men’s elite, juniors, masters, women’s elite, women’s junior, men’s open, master A (30-39 years old) and master B (40 above), while men’s and women’s elite, men’s and women’s juniors, men’s open and men’s masters A and B for the downhill event. (MDC)
