ATENEO de Manila University women's basketball coach lawyer Erika Dy cited the rich potentials of players from Davao City.

Dy, guesting in Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the NCCC Mall B3 Center to promote the ongoing 1st Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) Women’s Basketball Invitational, said: "Mindanao has lots of great talents but just lack the avenue to showcase their skills. Maraming mga talents sa Mindanao lalo na sa Davao City, nagkataon lang na mas maraming tournaments sa Manila.”

Dy said she saw Ateneo Davao team during a practice session and was impressed, saying, "Kailangan lang talagang mas ma-expose ang mga players. It also takes time to build a program that will help establish women’s basketball.”

Other coaches from the participating teams Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC), Addu and visiting Enderun Colleges also cited the importance of the tournament to enhance the skills of the players.

Addu coach Cyrielle Ramintas said that this is a good opportunity for women to be empowered, “Malaking bagay na pumayag ang Admu at Enderun na mag compete with us kasi this will help us build women’s basketball. Maraming talents ang Mindanao at hopefully tuloy-tuloy na ito.”

Ramintas said that they are taking it one step at a time, “Sana lumaki ang women’s basketball sa Davao City. Nanibago nga kami dahil sa buong experience namin, first time talaga na maraming nanood ng game at naka-on pa ang aircon. Nabuhayan kami ng loob na may halaga para sa lahat ang sport na ito.”

Enderun coach Haydee Ong said, “There is no shortcut to success. Importante talaga na may mabuting system at philosophy na gustong i-implement ang mga coaches at sports coordinators.

Basketball today is very scientific at matatalino ang mga players.”

HCDC assistant coach Juan Carlo Salvador added, “Hopefully tuloy-tuloy na talaga ito at sa next league, mas maraming visiting teams na ang sasali because this is a good experience for the players. Kung pinagpawisan kami, sana sa susunod, mas pagpawisan ang mga kalaban.”

The event organized by the Addu Athletics Department is headed by athletics director Noli Ayo in partnership with Sports Development Division of the City Mayor’s Office (SDD-CMO) and Samahang Basketbolista ng Pilipinas (SBP).
