THE Ateneo de Davao University (Addu) and Ateneo de Manila University (Admu) posted separate wins at the start of the 1st Ateneo de Davao University (Addu) Women's Basketball Invitational Wednesday afternoon at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center.
Addu routed Enderun Colleges, 74-45, behind Jennibeth Tiu who poured in 22 points for the host team. Tiu's consecutive three-pointers gave Addu a solid 57-34 advantage at the end of the third period.
The Dabawenyas never looked back to claim their first win in the four-day cagefest organized by Addu athletics in coordination with the city government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO). Alyssa Villamor added 14 points for Addu.
Addu coach Cyrielle Ramintas, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao, said the win was unexpected as they considered themselves the underdogs, adding, "Good experience itong pagkakapanalo namin lalo pa at maraming rookies sa team. Marami pa kaming matututunan sa tournament na ito."
The lawyer Erika Dy-mentored Admu, meanwhile, crushed Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC), 95-45, as Danica Therese Jose made 23 points.
HCDC assistant coach Juan Carlo Salvador said they will continue to work hard in their next game, saying, "Kahit talo kami, nakatulong din sa morale ng mga players na AdmuU ang kalaban nila. Nahirapan kami sa laki ng mga kalaban pero dadalhin namin ang experience na ito para mas mag improve sa susunod na laro.”
Dy said that they are learning from their experiences in the league,
“Hindi lang kami ang may maituturo sa kanila because we are also learning from the techniques of other teams.”
Davao City teams HCDC and Addu were playing each other as of presstime.
The event is officiated by Samahang Basketbolista ng Pilipinas (SBP) under regional director Regino "Boy" Cua.
