DAVAO City clinched a silver medal and a bronze in the just-concluded persons with disability (PWDs) chess tournament of the 2014 Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission (POC-PSC) National Games in Makati Coliseum.

Dabawenyo Aldrin Pana earned 1.5 points to place second in the standard event while Rodolfo Sarmiento of Manila City went on to capture the gold medal with 2.5 points. Ching Francis of Mandaluyong City got the bronze while Pasay City's Anthony Abogado placed fourth.

In the PD/Ortho/Division blitz category, Bacolod City's Eric Abanco scored perfect five points to pocket the gold over Edwin Nuguid of Pampanga and Jobert Lomanta of Davao City who settled for silver and bronze, respectively. Nuguid bested fellow four-pointer Lomanta via superior tiebreaks in the 17-player division.

Lomanta axed four wins but lost his opening round against Abanco.

The city's para athletes are supported by the city government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office as well as Philspada.

National Chess Federation of the Philippines regional director and Philspada Davao City president James Infiesto served as arbiter of the tournament. (MLSA)
