DAVAO City's Fide master (FM) Austin Jacob Literatus and Ella Grace Moulic are upbeat about their chances in the 15th Association of Southeast Asian Nation (Asean) Age-Group Chess Championship 2014 slated June 3 to 12 in Macau, China.

Both players earned their spots in the Macau-bound Team Philippines by topping the respective boys under-20 and girls U-16 events, respectively, of the National Age-Group Chess Championship at Leachar Resort and Leisure Park in San Antonio, Quezon Province.

In yesterday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at NCCC Mall B3 Center, Moulic said she has been doing her homework for the competition.

"Nagsi-search naa ko sa internet kung ano ba ang standing ng mga makakalaban ko lalo na ang Vietnam na over-all champion last year. Although nanalo ako sa national, kailangan paring magpraktis," Moulic said.

The 16-year-old Holy Cross of Davao College (CHDC) player said it's a blessing to represent the country again. She also competed in the 14th edition of event in Chai Mai, Thailand last year.

Literatus, now with the National University varsity team, said he has been studying different openings, adding: "Review talaga sa opening kasi kung lugi ka sa opening pa lang, malaki ang possibility na matalo."

Literatus, who hails from Toril, said he enjoyed his stint in the nationals, saying, "Mahirap lahat ang mga nakalaban naming pero nakayanan pa rin basta may tiwala sa sarili."

The City Government of Davao, through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO), will shoulder their domestic plane tickets while the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) will cover all traveling expenses in their Macau joust.

Both chessers thanked Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, SDD-CMO, International Arbiter (IA) James Infiesto, coach Alfred Moulic, Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC), family and friends for their usual support.
