THE Get Into Rugby Clinic of the Davao Durians Rugby Football Club (DDRFC) drew 60 kids at the start of the five-day activity organized as part of the Davao Summer Sports for Peace Festival at the Davao City National High School.
The free training opened Monday and will end tomorrow. Beginners and veterans alike from SOS Children's Village of Davao, Foundation of Balay Pasilungan (FBP) and different participating schools and barangays joined the event backed up by the city government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office.
In an interview with Sun.Star Davao, DDRFC development officer Blessie Kate Delos Santos said that the training is focused in building good character of the kids through sport, "We joined all the participants regardless of their age to build their character and learn camaraderie through mingling with other kids."
Delos Santos said that DDRFC has slowly been achieving their target for grassroots development through the help of the city sports office.
"Malaki ang pasasalamat namin sa sports office dahil sa suporta nila at binigyan kami ng opportunity to be a part of the summer sports fest. Ngayon, unti-unti ng lumalaki ang selection pool namin dahil sa participation ng iba't-ibang communities," she said.
They have been conducting seminars at SOS CV, FBP, Barangays Buhangin, 11-B and Matina Aplaya.
"Malaki talaga ang potensyal ng mga taga Davao sa sport na ito. Meron din kaming nakitaan ng potensyal sa barangay Buhangin na unti-unti naming tini-train para maging member ng full contact rugby football team namin," she added.
