Maamo tops Felis chess

DAVAO City's pride Harrison Maamo captured the title of the 3rd Felis Resort Open Rapid Chess Championship held Saturday at Felis Resort Complex in Matina Aplaya.

Maamo scored perfect six points in the Swiss System format event to pocket the P10,000 top purse.

Fide Master (FM) Randy Canieda Segarra, who made 5.5 points, settled for the runner-up prize of P4,000. Melchor Arcenas Jr. of Cotabato City edged four other five-pointers


Efren Bautista, John Ray Batucan, Rhynan Arce and Ruel Nuttal with better tiebreaks to grab the third spot and P2,500.

The first Felis rapid champion Henry Lopez, meanwhile, settled for the eighth spot, while 4.5 scorers Jimmy Dano and National Master (NM) Roger Sarip finished ninth and 10th, respectively.

Special awardees were FM Austin Jacob Literatus (best junior), DhonaYngayo (best female) and Carl Zirex Sato (best kiddie). Each received a cash prize of P500.

The event, sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), was managed by tournament director Ronnie Tabudlong and Felis manager Rona Licera with NM/FNA Prospero Cruz, Nestor Ngo, Rowel Modina and Cecilio Acas as arbiters.
