TEAMWORK paid off for the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) secondary girls volleyball team that salvaged a silver medal in the recently-concluded Palarong Pambansa 2014 in Sta. Cruz, Laguna.

Coach Kirk Marlon Mojica, in Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at NCCC Mall Davao B3 Center, said: "Target lang talaga namin na makapasok sa top four pero na-exceed pa ang aming expectations dahil mas malaking achievement ang ibinigay sa amin which is nag silver kami against Western Visayas na isa sa pinakamalakas na volleyball team.”

He admitted, however, that he lacked the experience as it was his first time to coach a Palaro team.

“We may not be strong individually but we are strong as a team. Malaking factor na halos nasa iisang school lang sila lahat dahil mas komportable ang mga players. Motivation din namin ang Davao Lady Agilas sa success nila sa Shakey’s V-League. Na-boost ang aming confidence na kaya pala naming mag compete against other tough volleyball teams,” he added.

The team was mostly bannered by Ateneo de Davao University players with reinforcements from Stella Maris Academy of Davao and Davao Wisdom Academy.

Player Patria Jela Peña, for her part, said there was no pressure at all during the finals, “Hindi namin kailangan ma-pressure. Parang ordinary game lang siya kaya nag succeed.”

Alyssa Aldwin Alterado, meanwhile, said, “Na-realize namin during sa Palaro na we are really best as a team. Sa mga susunod sa amin, always remember to pray, do not be distracted and have fun.”

Peña signed up for the Mapua Institute of Technology volleyball team while Alterado is joining the University of Sto. Tomas (UST).

Coach Mojica said that they are eyeing new players to become a part of the Ateneo team since only three regular players will remain as majority of them had graduated from High School.

Davraa secondary volleyball team thanked Department of Education (Deped), Sports Development Division of the City Mayor’s Office (SDD-CMO), Davao Lady Agilas and the parents for the support as well as God for his guidance.
