FIRST of all, we would like to start with thanksgiving lifted from the post of Venus Flores, Team Captain of the jubilant, first ever homegrown volleyball team from Mindanao to the Shakey’s V-League, the Davao Lady Agilas:

“Thank you everyone for supporting the Davao Lady Agilas. It was a great experience joining SVL and meet new friends. We did not expect to have reached this stage. We hope to have etched a good memory not to be forgotten in years to come. We also owe what little success we have to the coaching staff, to all the sponsors and fans, who have gifted us with t-shirts, to Mayor Rody Duterte, Coaches Abet Bernan and Shane Alagao, Coach Framel, Sir Butch Ramirez and to all friends and followers of the Davao Lady Agilas. God bless us all.”

Flores, as leader of the team, steered the Lady Agilas to a strong finish not everyone has expected for a team that was formed only even after the famed tournament was midway to its 11th season. In fact, the Far Eastern U was already highly charged with half a dozen games when the Agilas met them on their first assignment.

The individual performances and stats showed that they had a lot more to give with top Lady Agila spiker May Shiel Agton shooting to the number one spot in a total 88 points of the qualifying rounds. Rookie Ennajie Laure of UST comes next with 78 points. FEU’s Bernadette Pons in third with 74. Venus Flores in fourth with only a point shy away from Pons at 73.

Also in the list of Best Scorers is another Lady Agila Joecemer Tapic sharing the eleventh spot with Therese Veronas of the College of St. Benilde at 61 points apiece.

Not far away from Pau Soriano, 26th of Adamson U, is Lady Agila Angel Mae Antipuesto, 28th with 45 points, four and five points short from Soriano with 49 and Carmela Tunay, 25th with 50 points of UST.

Here comes ReynelenRaterta. Not as colorful as that of PBA’s AsiTaulava but Raterta’s hairstyle looks magnificent as her precision sets that made good spikers out of Agton and Flores. Raterta is second only to Yna Louise Papa of FEU with 173 and 136 running sets respectively. Former MVP and several times best setter Rhea Dimaculangan of UST is in 4th place with 128. There will be no precision hits, no excellent sets without the first ball. Here is where the non-scoring skills of Lady Agila Irish Dignadice comes in. The Davao Libero is in fourth place with 27.47 efficiency rating. Dancel Jan Dusaran of UST is first place with 37.70.
The word jubilant is best personified with somebody possessed with joy and surprise attacks in the field. That’s Princess Joy Olivares, dancing “Mambo Jambo” and ecstatic as she can be in every turn.

Of all six encounters the Lady Agilas had to contend with, most resounding were the last two games against reigning champs the National University, SVL defending champion and newly crowned UAAP first-time titlist Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles.

We understand how Flores felt with her sincere thanksgiving having proven themselves to be at par with the best of Manila’s highly-trained, well-financed, taller teams from the country’s prestigious colleges and universities. The Shakey’s V-League is in fact the most competitive where a combination of the best of UAAP and NCAA champions meet.

Not only that, SVL is also the favorite comeback trail of former UAAP-NCAA MVPs as in the case of fan favorites Daquis and Gonzaga. These two members of the Philippine national team are catching up with the Best of 4 in the current semis as guest players of FEU where Daquis played as team captain for a number of years.

Coach Abet Bernan was nothing but grateful for the unconditional support for their stint in Manila.
