STA.CRUZ, Laguna – The Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) elementary and secondary boys football teams booked seats in the 2014 Palarong Pambansa quarter-finals after beating their respective rivals in two separate venues.
The Ronoel Garfin-coached elementary booters blanked Zamboanga Peninsula, 1-0, behind Amir Andre Amaikurut's goal at the University of the Philippines Los Banos field yesterday.
Garfin's boys were set to play Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR) as of yesterday presstime.
"Paningkamutan nga makasulod mi sa semis. Kaya raman namo ang CAR. Excited ang mga bata. Dako akong kumpiyansa sa team (We will do our best to enter the semi-finals. I think we can beat CAR. The players are excited. I have great confidence in the team)," Garfin said in text messages to Sun.Star Davao.
The secondary booters, meanwhile, defeated Eastern Visayas, 1-0, at the Laguna Sports Complex to face Zamboanga in the quarters set late yesterday afternoon at the Laguna State Polytechnic University. Jed Diamante knocked in Davraa's goal.
Davraa's secondary girls volleyball also advanced into the quarter-finals after spanking CAR, 25-19, 25-20 to lead bracket D. They will play Eastern Visayas at the LSC Main Gymnasium 4.
Coach Kirk Mojica, in an interview with Sun.Star Superbalita, said, "Trabahuon gihapon ang game kay nag-improve ang Eastern Visayas since the last time na nagduwa mi atong Shakey’s (We will have to work hard as our rival has improved since we played them at the Shakey's league)."
At the Pila Municipal Gym, Davraa's secondary boys sepak takraw team demolished Central Visayas, 42-29, 56-51, to keep its unbeaten slate in five outings. Davraa also toppled Ilocos (42-26, 55-55), Central Luzon (45-63, 24-42, 58-59), Caraga (57-60, 54-66, 57-55) and Bicol (30-42, 42-21, 42-27).
In elementary girls softball, Davraa bowed to Calabarzon, 0-10. Coach Princes Lagundon said the players just lost steam, succumbing to a series of errors.
"At least mutaas among ranking run kay last year last gyud mi (We improved this year since we were at the bottom of the standings last year)," Lagundon said. Her girls will play for seventh place today.
Over at the LSC tennis courts, Ateneo de Davao University player Jenni Celine Dizon shutout April Jean Elumba of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm), 8-0, to collide with a Calabarzon netter in the next round of the secondary girls singles competition.
Dizon's teammate Jed Aquino, however, fell at the hands of a CAR rival, 7-9.
Dizon and Aquino formed part of the region's secondary girls tennis team that won a gold medal. (MSR/MLSA)
