Moulic, Gimony capture sec girls team blitz silver

THE Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) tandem of Ella Grace Moulic and Joerlz Gimony clinched the secondary girls team blitz silver medal of the 2014 Palarong Pambansa chess competition at the Laguna State Polytechnic University Library in Sta, Cruz Laguna.

Moulic and Gimony combined for 8.5 points to edge Western Visayas team of Alea Bianca Garingalao and Cristy Cabungcag via superior tiebreaks. The latter got the bronze instead while Southern Tagalog's woman Fide master (WFM) Marie Antoinette San Diego annexed the gold with 13.5 points.

In the individual competition, Davraa woodpushers struggled as top-seed Moulic finished fifth in secondary girls event where third-ranked San Diego scored perfect seven points to pocket the gold medal. Second-seeded Mendoza (6.5) and Cyliz Kaessa Merilles of Mimaropa Region grabbed the next two spots.


National age-group girls U16 champion Moulic tallied 4.5 points made four wins, one draw and two losses. She bowed to Mendoza in the fourth round and to Northern Mindanao's Bhea Buen Ecal of Northern Mindanao in the final round.

In the boys' side, Davraa's John Vistal Raymundo landed 15th with four points even as top-ranked Daryl Unix Samantilla of NCR clinched the gold with perfect seven points. Central Visayas' Allan Pason (6.0) got the silver and Armm's Sarri Subahani (5.0) salvaged the bronze.

Eric Yngayo Jr. finished 10th with four points in the elementary boys class topped by Central Visayas bet Chris Aldritz Pondoyo who earned 6.5 points in the seven-round Swiss System format event. Cagayan Valley's Eric Labog, Jr. and Ronald Canino of the National Capital Region (NCR), who toted identical 5.5 points, each took the silver and bronze, respectively. Davraa placed 12th in the team category.

Davraa's Jan Rachel Manlupic placed ninth in elementary girls with four points. Gold medalist Jesca Docena of NCR garnered six points beating Me Ann Joy Baclayon of Northern Mindanao via superior tiebreak. The latter copped the silver instead while NCR's Kylen Joy Mordido (5.5 points) ended up with the bronze.

Davraa chessers hope to bounce back in the main standard event.
