Lupian leads Diez Open chess tourney

NATIONAL master Alexander Lupian of Davao City leads after four rounds in the 3rd Engineer Alan Diez Open Chess Tournament held Sunday at NCCC Mall, 2nd floor, Food Cove, Matina.

Second-seeded NM Lupian took the lead with four points while third-seeded Jayson Salubre of Bohol and Panabo City's fifth-seeded Henry Roger Lopez posted identical 3.5 points to share the second and third spots, respectively.

Fide Master (FM) Randy Segarra of Manila who scored 3.5 points placed fourth, followed by fellow 3.5 pointers FM Austin Jacob Literatus, Gino Angelo Asuncion and NM Macacuna Macala.


The next three places went to three pointers Davao City's 15th-seeded Nofre Reyes, Jimmy Dano of Digos City and visiting Andrew Koenigsberg of United States of America

As of this writing Sunday, the fifth round is being played by the contestants. The winner of the event will receive P4,000 and a trophy while P2,000 and P1,000 for the second and third spots, respectively.

About P750 will be given to the next two placers while medals will be given to the sixth to 10th finishers.

Special prizes of P500 and medals will each be given to the top junior, top kiddies and top female players.

The event is organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Region XI, Davao with tournament director Engr. Alan Diez, chief arbiter Samuel Yu, deputy chief Alfred Moulic and arbiters' Joseph Gener Palero and Gerry Catibod. (MDC)
