Boatman/Escape Route win Apo Boulder Face Challenge

TEAM Boatman/Escape Route composed of triathletes April John Maniyog, Mark Anthony Rance and Dennis Ararao emerged champion in the open elite division of the just concluded Mt. Apo Boulder Face Challenge 2014 on April 26-27.

Maniyog, Rance and Ararao finished the race with an outstanding 13 hours, 23 minutes and 23 seconds to pocket the champion’s prize of P150,000 in the 120 kilometers race dubbed as the longest race in the Philippines in terms of trekking.

The second place went to team Apo Ville that clocked 13:35:21 with racers Ireezbone Barrientos, Hilario Ladra and Jayrald Daraydo. The third sport was awarded to Mountain Hardwear/White Peak bannered by Dexter Nonato, Marcial Catanggi and Bryan Gabañete that finished with a time of 13:40:11.


Apo Ville and Mountain Hardwear/White Peak received P100,000 and P75,000 as second and third respectively.

City Davao Annex said that they practiced along Mt. Apo a week prior to the competition, to prepare themselves for the long race.

“Proper training gyud ang gibuhat namo aron mag champion. Two months palang nabuo among team kay gikan pud mi sa lain-lain nga team. Maayo gyud ang among chemistry, (Our team has been formed two months ago but despite it we still won because of proper training. We had good chemistry.)” Ararao said.

All-Male Relay champion is team Tri Buddies (12:29:42) bannered by Edshyl Brañanola, Jose Sevilla and Juanito Mahinay, followed by Nakayama (12:44:00) with Joerge Andrade, Azlan Pagay and Novo Rey Roble while PNP Crame composed of Victor Ayohan Jr., Melvin Awit and Melquiades Esquierdo came third (14:18:08).

Team Buddies Tagum captured the all-female relay title while special awards were given to All-Male Relay team Tri_buddies Tagum (fastest trekkers) and Bumac as fastest water tubers and fastest road runners. Open elite special awards were: Boatman/Escape Route (fastest trekkers), Black Arrows/People’s Park Runners (fastest water tubers) and Buddies/PNP (fastest road runners).

The event was organized by the Local Government Unit of Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur in cooperation with the Department of Tourism Davao, Department of Environment and Natural Resources XI, Aboitiz Corporation, San Miguel Brewery Inc., Mountain Hardwear, Franklin Baker and Sea Oil. (MDC)
