THE Rancho Palos Verdes Golf and Country Club (RPVGCC) led over Apo Golf and Country Club on Day 1 of the first Chikaan Cup Golf Tournament held at RPVGCC Friday.

Organizer Glenn Yap of Chikaan restaurant cited the day's highlight during the last match where Boy Tan of Palos hit a heroic tee shot on hole number 17 par 3.

"His (Tan's) ball landed four feet below the hole for birdie that gave them 1 up with one hole to go and won their match against Ryan Co and Jorge Martinez,"Yap said in an e-mail to Sun.Star Davao. Tan was paired with Chris Tan.

Tan's feat, according to Yap, gave Palos the edge over Apo after the first day.

In the alternate shot, Roderick Lo and Mark Lopez of Team Palos were 3 up over Toffee Tionko and Dende Castro of Team Apo with two holes to go in the first match while Apo bounced back in the second match as Chikoy Saavedra and Vincent Gumapac went 5 up over Palos bets Larry Miculob and Dominic Choi with barely four holes to go.

Apo took the third match with Karlos Alba and Patrick Tan winning 2 up at the expense of Leo Yap and Demi Mondero of Palos, only one hole to go, but Joel Yamyamin and Ronald Galicia regained form for Palos in the fourth match, winning 3 up over Leo Fusilero and Jing Gavino of Apo with two holes to go.

Yap said both teams discussed their strategy for the final day of the Ryder Cup-patterned tournament that features the singles matches as of yesterday presstime.

The pairings are: Leo Fusilero (Apo) vs Yamyamin (Palos); Alimar Etrone (Apo) vs Jericho Bajo (Palos), Martinez (Apo) vs Boy Tan (Palos), Saavedra (Apo) vs Mondero (Palos), Patrick Tan (Apo) vs Lo (Palos), Alba (Apo) vs Leo Yap (Palos), Paul Garcia (Apo) vs Miculob (Palos), Ryan Co (Apo) vs Monchit Mackay (Palos), Tionko (Apo) vs Chris Tan (Palos), Gumapac (Apo) vs Galicia (Palos), Jing-Jing Gavino (Apo) vs Choi (Palos) and De Castro (Apo) vs Lopez (Palos).
