TEN national masters (NMs) will see action in the 3rd Engineer Alan Diez Open Chess tournament slated May 3 and 4 at Function Cove hall, 2nd floor of NCCC Mall Davao.

NMs Alan Macala, former Olympian Alexander Lupian of Davao City, Cedric Magno of Panabo City, Bob Jones of Cotabato City and Winston Silva of Tagum City along with Fide Master Austin Jacob Literatus, bemedalled Henry Lopez, International Arbiter (IA) James Infiesto and national arbiter Diez confirmed to compete in the six-round Swiss System tournament.

Tournament Director Samuel Yu bared this in yesterday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) forum at NCCC Mall Davao B3 Center Lanes.

Yu said a total of 100 chess players are expected to join the event. “We want to develop more local talents who will become grand chess masters in the future. We are happy that our young chessers such as Batang Pinoy champion Ella Grace Moulic, FM Literatus and among others are making names in the sport,” Yu said.

Diez, meanwhile, said that the open tournament is a great way to hone the skills of all chess players regardless of their age.

“We always encourage the young breeds to join open tournaments to upgrade their skills in chess. We are proud that Davao City players alone are constantly gaining awards in Asia,” Diez said.

The champion will take home P4,000 plus trophy while the second and third placers will each receive medals and P2,000 and P1,000, respectively. The next two placers will go home with P750 each while medals will go to the sixth to 10th placers.

Special prizes of P500 and medals will each be given to the top junior, top kiddies and top female players. Registration is P200.
