A BASKETBALL competition for the less privileged children dubbed as Davao City Midnight Basketball Cup is slated on May 12 to 31 in celebration of the Davao City Summer Sports for Peace Festival.

In an interview with Sun.Star Davao, Ronnel Abrenica of the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor’s Office (SDD-CMO) said that the summer sports festival also looks into the welfare of the youth especially the less privileged.

“We patterned this basketball cup for the children in conflict with the law (CICL) from Maryland U.S.A and Brazil. They have well-created programs specifically aimed at reaching out to the youth,” Abrenica said.

He said that the sports office doesn’t just look at honing the skills of the Dabawenyos through sport but at the same time create an avenue for the neglected children to also become a part of the community.

SDD-CMO asked for the assistance of the police officers via Superintendent Caezar Cabuhat to organize the tournament.

“The Oplan Tokhang (Toktok, Hangyo) program of the city will identify the teens 15 years old and below who will join the event,” he said.

A total of 24 teams with a maximum of 12 players per team will compete in the basketball midnight cup. Six teams will battle per bracket in a round robin format.

This is the first time that the city government of Davao will hold a basketball tournament among the CICL as part of the Duterte Game Plan.
The venue of the tournament has yet to be announced. (MDC)
