THE SOS Children’s Village of Davao was elated by the recent feat of Agot Danton, Maylene Albaracin and Joy Roces Chavez who formed part of Team Philippines that finished runner-up in the girls event of the 2014 Street Child World Cup in Brazil recently.

In a message sent to Sun.Star Davao, SOS Davao village director Leonilo Rivero said that they are preparing for the arrival of the three players.

“Just like any other families, we plan to fetch them from the Davao International Airport upon their arrival and bring banners to congratulate them. We, however, still don't know when they are arriving,” Rivero said.

He said that it was just last December 13, 2013 when the girls were recruited for the screening.

Coach Roy Moore of Fairplay For All Foundation and the head coach of Team Philippines conducted a try-out at SOS CV where the three were selected to compose the team.

He said that it was not easy to let them join when the good news of their inclusion to the national squad reached us in February since there were many requirements and papers they must comply with.

“This once in a lifetime opportunity was really meant for them because things went well. We also wanted to show that we are not merely a residential-care organization but we are a family that supports the dreams of our children. Whenever our children fight for their dreams, we also fight with them,” he added.

Danton, who just arrived in the country along with her teammates, said in a Facebook chat conversation, "“Madami akong experience doon. Iyak ako ng iyak sa tuwa na dumating sa amin ang pagkakataong ito. Hindi pa namin alam kailan kami babalik sa Davao pero maraming salamat po sa inyong lahat.”

Danton received the Golden Boot Award in the prestigious tournament.
