THE Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) named the new members of the chess varsity team after qualifying during the tryout held recently at the HCDC Conference Room.
Jimzon Trangia, Manuelito Belarma, Alvin Acas, Magesh Kumar Pioquito, and Dexter Echalico topped the men’s event while Janes Caingles, Mercy Bautista, Marianne Jasmine Infiesto, Geneses May Palero and Rhianne Tagalog grabbed the first four spots in the distaff side.
In a text message sent to Sun.Star Davao, chess coach Ely Acas said that the newly added members of the chess varsity team will be awarded a full scholarship grant plus an allowance from HCDC.
Acas said that the scholars will start training by next week. “We will be training twice a week for the entire summer season to hone the skills of the players,” he said.
He said that HCDC’s scholarship program is provided to students especially the less fortunate with proven potential in a particular field of sports upon meeting the academic standards of HCDC.
As stated in HCDC website, meanwhile, the sports scholarship program envisions to increase awareness among students of the role of sports as vehicle in attaining Catholic education; the moral, the intellectual and the physical development. (MDC)
