UM rules ‘Araw’ volleyball-A A +A

HIGHLY-TOUTED University of Mindanao (UM) swept the men's and women's titles of the Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Pulong Duterte 77th Araw ng Dabaw Inter-Collegiate Invitational Volleyball Tournament held recently at the Philippine Women's College of Davao (PWC) Gym.
UM survived past DMMA College of Southern Philippines (DCSP), 25-17, 17-25, 25-21, 25-20, to annex the men's crown while the UM women spikers spanked Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC), 25-11, 25-10, 26-24 in their championship match.
PWC, for its part, defeated Ateneo de Davao University, 25-21, 28-26, to grab the third spot in men's division while Jose Maria College (JMC) defeated San Pedro College via default.
The UM men spikers turned back Ateneo, 25-23, 25-19, to arrange a finals showdown with DCSP that escaped past PWC, 25-23, 18-25, 25-22 in the semi-finals.
The UM men's volleyball team was bannered by Jeff Agang, Mark Antonio, Marvin Batilo, Kevin Bisera, John Patrick Caunga, Francis B. Cerillo, Jelisthare Demeterio, Raymark Anthony Naranjo, Laurence Christopher Pungay, Vincent Lorenz Suaybaguio, Rolly Tagalog, Peter Paul Tagalog and Jimboy Yarte with Jonathan Vanta as coach.
In the distaff side, the Carlos "Kaloi" Gabucan, Jr.-mentored UM whipped JMC, 25-19, 25-11 to arrange a titular encounter with HCDC, a 25-23, 25-11 winner over SPC.
"Natsambahan lang," Gabucan said in a text message to Sun.Star Davao.
Gabucan leaned on the services of Mayshiel Agton, Princess Oliveros, Reynelen Raterta, Mikee Joy Albeos, Karessa Vicente, Marjorie Blanco, Kristell Lyka Malikol, Pamela Demegillo, Joana Marie Pacunla, Angela Marie Rebosura and Kim Zyia Manlapaz.
Other teams that joined the men's division were HCDC and University of Southeastern Philippines Mintal, while PWC and HCDC and Ateneo also competed in the women's event of the tournament organized by the Balibolista de Dabaw and sponsored by the city government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office.
