DEFENDING champion The Royal Mandaya Hotel-City Mayor's Office (TRMH-CMO) of Davao City and MP Pacman Warriors of General Santos City arranged a finals clash after beating their respective rivals Tuesday night in the Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Pulong Duterte 77th Araw ng Dabaw Commercial Invitational Basketball Tournament at the jampacked Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center.

The championship was set Wednesday evening after the 5 p.m. battle for third pitting Goldstar Hardware against Montana Pawnshop.

TRMH-CMO grabbed its third straight win by beating Goldstar Hardware, 86-76, while the Pacman Warriors rolled past Montana Pawnshop, 77-72, to post its second win after three outings.

Coach Ronel Leuterio of TRMH-CMO said, "We just focused on the what we're doing best, and that's playing good defense. I think what we've really shown is that we have the ability to lock down our opponent when we needed to."

Leuterio also said they focused on lock down defense against their rivals and run the ball when they had the opportunity.

The Ice Gravador-coached Goldstar soared to a 26-22 lead over TRMH-CMO at the end of the first period but the latter crawled back to cut their rival's lead by just two at the break, 40-42. Mike Harry's layup for Goldstar was countered by a trey from TRMH-CMO's Darwin Cordero to make it a one-point ballgame, eight minutes and 21 seconds left in the third.

Marlon Basco of Goldstar, however, buried a triple to take a five-point advantage. But John Ferriols of TRMH-CMO answered with a jumper and teammate Nino Gelig scored on a triple to snatch a 50-49 lead barely 6r:19 in the quarter. TRMH-CMO then rallied behind Devon Sullivan and Dino Da-a for the team to pace, 65-60, at the the end of the third canto.
TRMH-CMO also capitalized on the crucial errors and costly turnovers of Goldstar Hardware despite four back-to-back triples of John Paul Escobal and Leomer Losentes to keep the lead, 81-75, in the final two minutes. Daa's triple and Ferriols' basket secured the match even if Harry converted one charity throw.

Calo, who accounted for three triples, and Ferriols sank 14 points each to lead scoring for TRMH-CMO while Cordero, Sullivan, Gelig and Daa chipped in similar 11 points.

Losentes and Jumabon Bulac drilled in 15 and 14, respectively, for Goldstar. Harry and Escobal added 13 each.

Louie Medalla, meanwhile, topscored for Pacman with 15 points.

Cash prizes and trophies await winners of the cagefest organized by the Duterte Basketball League and sanctioned by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas regional director Boy Cua. It is funded by the city government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office.
