Araw ng Dabaw Arnis tourney slated for March 30

THE Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Pulong Duterte 77th Araw ng Dabaw Sports Festival Arnis Tournament will kick off on March 30 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Gaisano Grand Citimall.

In the recent Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at NCCC Mall Davao B3 Center Lanes, Arnis Philippine Davao (APD) head Mario Palazuelo said that some 100 arnis players are expected to join the event which is open for both boys and girls.

"The tournament will be participated by some arnis medalists of Davao City to prepare them for the national arnis tournament this year," Palazuelo said.


He said that all players will be classified during the event proper to avoid biases.

He said, seven categories will be contested including pinweight, flyweight, bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, filter weight and middleweight.

"The one-day tournament will feature boys 47 kilograms (kgs), 47-51 kgs, 51-56 kgs, 56-60 kgs, 60-66 kgs and 66 to 73 kgs; girls 43 kgs, 43-47 kgs, 47-51 kgs, 51-56 kgs, 56-60 kgs, 60-66 kgs and 66 to 73 kgs," he added.

Medals and certificates await the winners from the City Government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO).

Arnis Philippine Davao meanwhile presented its arnis team from the University of Southeastern Philippines who won 10 golds, one silver and three bronzes in the Mindanao Association State Tertiary School competition held at Malaybalay Bukidnon on March 1-7.

Winners were Adelfa Sagne (bantamweight), Mary Jean Sitjar Ocho (pinweight), Marielle Mae Ramos (welterweight), Mia Galvez (featherweight), Chrezel Lao (featherweight), Jeanelyn Morcillo (lightweight), Emmanuel Chua (flyweight) and Mark Despojo (half lightweight).

Teodorico Dela Cruz Jr., served as the team's coach.

APD plans to reach out to far-flung areas in the city to develop the skills of those who are interested to venture into the sport and that they are willing to provide equipment for the training. (MDC)
