COUNTRY'S tennis stars, led by Philippine Tennis Association (Philta)-ranked men's No. 2 Johnny Arcilla, arrive today to show their wares in exciting four days of action in the 3rd National Men's and Women's Invitational Tennis Tournament slated to start tomorrow until Sunday at the Woodridge Tennis Club courts in Ma-a.

Tournament chair Anton Ferrazzini said all 16 players including two Davao City-based netters will draw lots at 12:30 p.m. today at a local restaurant.

"Manila-based and Cebu City-based players are arriving tomorrow. We will then know the pairings and who will be teaming up in men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles categories," Ferrazzini said.

The tournament also features the premier main men's singles and women' singles events. Arcilla is all set to defend his title while the women's crown will be open to all as reigning champion Clarice Patrimonio, who is training in Spain, won't be around to defend her title.

Philta-ranked No. 4 Patrick John Tierro, No. 5 Vicente Alberto Anasta, No. 6 Marc Anthony Reyes, No. 8 Leander Lazaro, No. 9 Ronard Joven and Dabawenyos Mark Anthony Alcoseba, who occupied the 10th spot in the Philta rankings as of Feb. 28, and University of Sto. Tomas varsity standout Ralph Kevin Barte are also eyeing the top prize of P30,000 at stake for the men's single champion in the P216,000-rich netfest co-presented by Merco, Selecta and the Flot Group.

Philta women's No. 4 Edilyn Balanga will be the top-seed in women's singles class where eighth-ranked Marinel Rudas and ninth-ranked Hannah Grace Espinosa are also among the early favorites. Rachelle de Guzman, Jzash Canja, veteran Aileen Rogan, Cebu City's collegiate standout Sally Mae Siso and Ateneo de Davao University's Jenni Celine Dizon may pull off surprises.

Tickets, which are available at Merco Cabaguio branch, are pegged at P400 (season ticket for four days), P150 (for first two days) and P200 (for last two days).

Proceeds of the invitational tournament, organized in celebration of the 77th Araw ng Dabaw celebration, will benefit the Maharlika Charity Foundation.
