DEFENDING champion Reynaldo Geronimo of the City Treasurer's Office (CTO) and Gina Aclon of the Sangguniang Panlungsod/Admin (SP/Admin) bagged the standard gold medals at the close of the 2014 Dachea chess competition at the NCCC Mall Davao Food Cove Hall on Friday.

Geronimo beat Jayquiel Balite of the Public Safety and Security Command Center (PSSCC) in their men's championship match to clinch the gold while the latter took the silver instead. Ferdinand Bedro of the CTO defeated Danilo Rodrigo of the General Services Office to grab the third place.
The back-to-back titlist Geronimo tallied a total of six points in the seven-round Swiss System format eliminations.

Geronimo and Bedro combined for 11 points to pocket the men's standard team gold over GSO's Rodrigo and Crestino Arreisgado who totaled 9.5 points to take the silver. PSSCC, which also had 9.5 points, was relegated to the team bronze having inferior tiebreaks against GSO.

Aclon, for her part, trounced Cherie Marie Cruza of PSSCC to annex the women's standard gold. Cruza got the silver while Lilibeth Villafuerte of City Agriculturist Office went home with the bronze.

SP won the team gold courtesy of Aclon and Emie Josie Cosare (10 points) followed by City Agri's Villafuerte and Khalia Diaz (5.0) with the silver and PSSCC's Cruza and Aimee Quijano with the bronze.

In the blitz event, Carmelo Limbohan of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) bested another six-pointer Reynaldo Saludes of City Mayor's Office (CMO) with superior tiebreaks to capture the men's gold. Saludes copped the silver while Arriesgado, who finished with five points, salvaged the bronze.

Cenro also won the team gold behind Limbohan and Rodrigo del Leon's total eight points while PSSCC's Severino Gadian, Jr. and Marvin Gaspe (8.0) got the silver and SP's Mulato and Jose Mari Balaman (7.0) ended up with the team bronze.

Quijano subdued Diaz of City Agri for the gold in women's blitz as the latter claimed the silver. The bronze went to Cosare of SP.

The tournament was organized by the Davao City Hall Employees Association (Dachea) and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.

It was backed up by the city government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayot's Office.
