BEETHOVEN "Ben" Sur of bodybuilding was re-elected as the President of the Davao City Sports Council Inc. (DCSCI) last Saturday in the General Assembly and Election of Officers at the Apung Kula Restaurant along Rizal Street.

All 18 present members of DCSCI voted Sur as president with the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) serving as Comelec of their polls.

New set of officers were: Joaquin Sarabia of baseball (1st vice president re-elect), Atty. Eduardo Estores of Judo (2nd vice president), Ronnie Tabudlong of chess (secretary), Belen Taala of athletics (assistant secretary), Eduardo Grandeza of Phil. Moo Duk Kwan (treasurer), volleyball's Dacs Yambao (auditor), Dexter So of wushu (business manager) and karatedo's Rommel Tan as press relations officer.

In an interview with Sun.Star Davao, Sur committed to conduct different sporting events that will showcase other sports that are not yet popular in the mainstream.

"There are sports that need to be supported especially arnis, table tennis and sepak takraw. We have produced great athletes among those mentioned sports yet competitions are only limited within the schools," he said.

He said that DCSCI will find ways to raise funds that will push through their sports development program.

"The city government has been supporting our endeavors and they are our biggest supporter ever since, yet given the increased budget in the Duterte Game Plan or the Davao City Comprehensive Sports Development Program, we also hope that our budget will be increased. We have been asking support also from the Philippine Sports Commission but the support is not consistent," he said.

He said that if a bigger budget will be allocated to the DCSCI, bigger events will be conducted which will become a stepping stone for the local athletes to be more exposed and in the future be recognized in the international arena.

"There are big opportunities in the sports industry and we should be very serious in our sports development program," he said.

Philippine Moo Duk Kwan (PMDK) represented by their president Eduardo Grandeza and Atty. Eduardo Estores of Davao Judo Association meanwhile, were inducted as new members of the council.

Sur said that proven integrity in organizing sports competitions and good moral character are two of the biggest qualifications of becoming a member of the council. "The selection process of becoming a member is not easy. We always make sure that those who will become a part of DCSCI will bring honor to what the founders have started 20 years ago," he said.

He said that the council will give recognition this year in the So Kim Cheng Sports Awards to Davao City athletes who have brought pride and honor in different sports competitions.
