THE Davao Dog Agility Unified Group (Daug) will hold the 1st Unity Cup, a dog agility competition, tomorrow and Sunday at the Phoenix Lanang Mega Station.
In the weekly Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum held at NCCC Mall B3 yesterday, Daug president Apo Aportadera said the event aims to provide a venue for dog sports and K9 training enthusiasts to hold a qualifying tournament in search for a Davao entry to national events in Manila.
“We want to give awareness to the people that Davao City had received numerous citations in dog agility competitions in the country. The event is important to enthusiasts because the pet that gets the most points based on winnings and participation will have the best chance to represent Davao in the national level,” he said.
Aportadera said that a free training seminar will be given to dog owners to teach them how to understand and take care of their dog during the first day.
A Phoenix receipt worth P 500 should be presented to get a slot in the seminar. Three veterinarians will be present to screen the participating dogs and ensure the health and condition of the dogs for the agility contest.
“We have two events, large breed agility and small breed agility. Mainly, the dogs will run through obstacles, enter tunnels and do hurdle activities with the support of their handlers,” he said.
The event will be judged by Eloy Diaz, Dr. Ken Lao and City Tourism Office (CTO) officer-in-charge Lisette Marques.
The fastest dogs to finish the obstacles without mistakes and violations will win trophies and cash prizes.
Daug will also host a national event here in the city approved by the Philippine Dog Athletics Association (PDAA) to promote responsible dog ownership among the Dabawenyos and end animal violence.
