PHILIPPINES' Davis Cup player Patrick John Tierro is excited about his third stint in the 3rd National Men's and Women's Invitational Tennis Tournament slated March 13 to 16 at the Woodridge Tennis Club courts in Maa, Davao City.

The 28-year-old Tierro, ranked No. 4 in Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) men's ranking as of Jan. 31, 2014 said he is excited about returning to the city.

"It's a very nice event and it's nice to play in Davao as well," Tierro told Sun.Star Davao in a recent phone interview.

The former De La Salle University standout said he could not turn down an invitation to play in Davao again.

Tierro, born in South Carolina, USA, however, did not make any prediction.

He said, "I'll just do my best and see what's going to happen. Every game is important so I'll think about it one round at a time."

Tierro will have his hands full as country's No. 2 Johnny Arcilla will also do his best to defend his men's singles title. Others eyeing to snatch the championship from the Butuan City native are No. 5 Vicente Alberto Anasta, No. 6 Marc Anthony Reyes, No. 8 Leander Lazaro, No. 9 Ronard Joven, No. 13 Roel Capangpangan and No. 10 Mark Anthony Alcoseba of Davao City.

In the distaff side, Philta women's No. 9 Hannah Grace Espinosa looks forward to competing in the Merco and Selecta-backed invitational tournament for the first time.

"I'm excited to play there and my expectation is that I will play better there," Espinosa said in a text message.

Espinosa hails from Cebu City but is a varsity scholar at National University in Manila. The second year Sports Management student was a singles quarter-finalist and doubles semi-finalist in the Philippine Columbia Association (PCA) Open 2013.

She is playing for NU in the ongoing University Athletic Association of the Philippines.

Also entered in the women's singles event are Philta women's No. 4 Edilyn Balanga, No. 8 Marinel Rudas, No. 15 Rachelle de Guzman, No. 18 Jzash Canja, veteran Aileen Rogan and wild card entry Jenni Celine Dizon of the Ateneo de Davao University.

The Maharlika Charity Foundation will benefit anew in the netfest that offers huge cash prizes to the men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles winners. (MLSA)
