THE Holy Child College of Davao (HCCD) posted a second straight win Sunday afternoon at start of The Royal Mandaya Hotel Cup (TRMH) Cup semi-finals at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center.
HCCD Reds stunned defending champion Ateneo de Davao University, 84-48, on the heels of escaping a 65-62 win in the morning.
HCCD mini headcoach Roger Rabago, in a phone interview Monday, said they were just lucky to start the single round-robin semi-finals with two straight wins.
"Bwenas lang gyud. Nagkugi ang mga bata katong laban sa PWC pero tulo lang man among lamang. Mas dako ang lamang namo sa daug namo sa Ateneo kay bwenas pud ang mga tira sa mga bata sulod man sad (We were just lucky. The boys really fought hard against PWC although we were just up by three points. We pulled a huge win over Ateneo with the luck that our players made good in their shooting)," Rabago said.
He, however, downplayed a sweep and a sure ticket to the finals citing the presence of bigger and taller line-up of Precious International School of Davao (PISD) which they may face in the resumption of games this weekend.
PWC, however, bounced back by whipping PISD, 81-75, while Ateneo edged PISD, 61-60.
The HCCD cadets of coach Nestor Sorrosa also entered the winning column by crushing Ford Academy of the Arts, 57-33. Ford also bowed to Assumption College of Davao, 68-73, in an earlier game.
The top two squads in each division will play for the crown in the championship but organizers have yet to decide the format of the finals.
The top four teams in each category will receive cash prizes of P5,000, P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000 in the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP)-sanctioned cagefest. (MLSA)
