Goldstar dethrones Montaña Pawnshop

THE Goldstar Hardware stunned defending champion Montaña Pawnshop, 82-73, to grab the Joysan Cup 55's Basketball Tournament championship title Sunday at the Montaña Recreation and Fitness Center gym in Agdao, Davao City.

Goldstar Hardware received the top purse of P5,000 while Montaña settled for the runner-up prize of P4,000.

Ching dribblers beat Hardwork, 86-81, in their battle for third to claim P3,000 while the latter got P2,000.


Goldstar head coach Jigger Saniel said they had a shorter line-up against Montaña but they came prepared for the titular showdown having held a series of practices the previous week.

"We focused on our advantage which is agility," Saniel said in an interview with Sun.Star Davao.

He said that they been longing to win in the league after their last championship in 2008, adding, "We worked hard in our defense and it just paid off."

Dodong Cagampang, who mentored Montaña, admitted they slacked off in their defense and offense.

Cagampang said, "We were not able to defend the title but we are still optimistic to rule in the next cup. It was not just our time to win.” Cagampang said.

Mythical Five members Ben Simpao, Carlos Ang, Rey Sumalinog, Nanding Gonzalez and Noly Banate received medals as the mythical five while Marcial Cagoco romped away with the most valuable player (MVP) honors.

Montaña Recreation and Fitness Center owner Mr. Armando Quibod also received a plaque for supporting the cagefest.

Quibod, in his acceptance speech, said he is grateful for the participation of each team in the league, “It is my happiness to see people in their 50’s playing basketball and sharing their skills in the sport. Hopefully we can continue this in the coming years so that we can still develop this good habit,” he said.

Joysan Cup 55's Basketball Tournament was organized by tournament chairman Eduardo Sandoval and Commissioner Peter Epe.
