IT'S the moment of truth as 15 colleges and university teams began action in the Davao Champions League at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center yesterday.

Spiced up by a colorful team parade with their drum and bugle corps and muses, coaches of participating teams were one in saying that the league is what they've been waiting for.

Ateneo de Davao Blue Knights team coach Miguel Solitaria, in a press conference after the opening rites, said that his players need not travel anymore just to witness "national standard" of opening ceremonies where each team representative lit up the torch to formally open the cagefest presented by Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc.

Jose Maria College (JMC) Kings coach Dodong Cagampang said, "The tournament serves as inspiration to college and university basketball players."

Coach Cadel Mosqueda of the Rizal Memorial College Bulldogs said that the league will serve as exposure and a source of experience for his squad.
Mat Cubero, president of Collegiate Coaches Association of Davao, welcomed the teams, saying, "Players should have the right attitude, action and ambition in order to win in any battle."

The tournament is sanctioned by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) regional direcor Regino "Boy" Cua.
