THE Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) emerged overall champion in the Women's National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA)-Mindanao judo qualifying tournament at the Davao Wisdom Academy.
HCDC collected a total of five gold medals, three silvers and three bronzes.
Mats College of Technology came in second overall with a total of three golds, three silvers and two bronzes while Davao Wisdom Academy won two gold and one silver.
Nicolo Penera of HCDC clinched the gold medal in the men's senior -55 kilograms (kgs) advance category by beating Christian Alibango and James Velez who settled with the silver and bronze medals, respectively, while teammate Junney Maelwas copped the gold in the men's senior -60 kgs. category at the expense of teammate Rey Canoy and Davao Central College (DCC)'s Jaypee Pojas.
Rodwell Casia also added a gold for HCDC by becoming champion in the men's senior -66 kgs category along with teammate Von Jake Bagohin who topped the men's senior -100 kgs category. Marie Flor Mangubat of HCDC chipped in a gold by ruling the women's -28 kgs. category.
Batang Pinoy 2012 medalist Carl Dave Aseneta of Mats lived up to the billing by defeating Lloyd Abucayan of Jose Maria College's to grab the gold medal in the open category. Camilla Bucio of Mats went home with gold after a win over Alyssa Gesalan in their women's senior -48 kgs championship while teammate Melcah Onez added a gold after emerging champion in the women's -45 kgs category.
Highly-touted Batang Pinoy 2012 gold medalist Charisse Divine Aseneta of DWA also added another feather to her cap with a gold medal performance in the women's -52 kgs. division.
Other winners in the judo fest were Regie Longos (men's beginner -55 kgs), Jhanen Mae Marcos (women's junior -48 kgs), Cris Badiang (men's junior), Benz Binoya (-66 kgs open), Allan Alisoso (men's junior -40 kgs), Dave Esmalla (men's senior -81 kgs), Erikson Peñera (men's senior -90 kgs), Karl Catungol (men's junior -55 kgs), Lyn Sajulla (-52 kgs open), Benjamin Penas (-73 kgs open) and Riza Laganse (women's -57 kgs).
WNCAA-Mindanao judo director Jay Aseneta, in an interview, with Sun.Star Davao, said the winners in each category earned the right to represent Davao City in the national finals set on March in Manila. (RPSA)
