DAVAO City's top young woodpushers gear up for the 2013 National Age-Group Chess Championship Qualifying Leg set on January 31 to February 3 in General Santos City.
Alfred Moulic, who was among the coaches of the city chess team that competed in the Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission (POC-PSC) Batang Pinoy 2012 National Championship in Iloilo City and Batang Pinoy Mindanao Qualifying in Dapitan City, bared this to Sun.Star Davao via Facebook chat on Tuesday.
Moulic said they hope to send 24 players with two representatives per age-group.
"Players who competed in the Batang Pinoy Mindanao qualifying are the ones being considered to represent the city in General Santos but we still have to finalize details since we are still awaiting confirmation from NCFP Manila regarding the competition," Moulic said.
If the tournament pushes through as scheduled, Dona Carmen Denia National High School's Austin Jacob Literatus and Holy Cross of Davao College's Ella Grace Moulic will likely lead the cast for the Davao City chess team.
Fide Master (FM) Literatus collected six gold medals in the Batang Pinoy Mindanao eliminations in Dapitan and bagged two silvers in the Iloilo nationals while Moulic clinched a gold and a silver in Iloilo.
Dhona Yngayo of Davao Central College of Toril and John Marvin Miciano of the Ateneo de Davao University are also strong bets along with Irish Yngayo.
The national age-group qualifying aims to select qualifers to the grand finals where winnres will get to represent the country to the 2013 Asean+ Age-Group Chess Championships in Bangkok, Thailand on June 8 to 17 and the 2013 Asian Youth Chess Championships in Mashdad, Iran on June 20 to 27.
In the 2012 AAGCC in Vietnam, Literatus captured three golds and two silvers while Moulic settled for a team silver. The feat won Literatus a slot to the AYCC held in Sri Lanka where he put up a very impressive finish.
The age-group qualifying will serve as a good tune-up for the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa)-bound city players. The regional meet is slated on Feb. 24 to March 1 in Tagum City.
It can be recalled that Moulic and Literatus led the medal haul for the Davraa chess team in the 2012 Palarong Pambansa held in Lingayen, Pangasinan. Moulic copped two golds while Literatus accounted for silver and a bronze.
