Editorial: Fly high-A A +A

SO THE party drug XTC has again morphed into an even more dangerous drug "fly high". This is but a hint on how partying that approximates euphoria will always be the market for drugs that muddle the brain.
ETC was deadly as it was with its main ingredient methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) says fly high has more than just MDMA, and that it has shabu to boot (methamphetamine hydrochloride).
Good luck to partygoers who need the added fizz of drug-induced happiness, may they survive to live productive lives when all the craze has died down.
It's sad really how it's easy to fall into the belief that devil-may-care-I-don't party life is the mark of a cool man or woman. It's sadder still because despite the well-documented adverse effects of narcotics, people still want to emulate the bratpacks of spoiled wealthy scions and their hangers-on.
But taking a deep look into how addiction to the party crowd that pop pills as a prerequisite to greater enjoyment we see dysfunctional families and children who have no sense of self-worth; finding solace in showing off their wealth and flaunting off their devil-may-care attitudes.
For the young, however, there will always be that sneaking envy for such coolness. Again, it is up to the parents to enable their children to thwart those feelings of envy and see the emptiness of such activities.
Indeed, parenting is a tough job, tougher still because in this present and coming generations, there are loads of instruments to get addicted. There's all kinds of drugs representing different lifestyles - from weed to shabu to XTC-plus; all kinds of gadgets to get hooked on - gaming, social networking, and maybe even porn, and; all kinds of inanities to deal with - public schools that barely have space for children to enjoy learning, scions of senators and the likes of Janet Napoles' daughter flaunting ill-gotten wealth like they deserve to have them.
Flying higher than the temporary euphoria fly high can offer means flying towards ideals that promises a different high when achieved, and this is where we have to focus our collective attention on, while bringing the young with us, so as to encourage them as well to focus on them as they grow up to battle with their very active hormones.
While indeed there are all the evils of this generation, which are upgrades of the evils of past generations (from XTC to Fly High and from poker/billiards/hantak to DoTA, among many others), there is also a growing movement among the youth to step up and make a difference in their schools and communities. By training our activities and attention on these, we the adults too, can be able to share our interest to the young. As adults, we have to lead the way, and the way is best plotted out starting in the formative years. Bottomline: family and community togetherness and interaction.
