DIRECTOR’S Cut: (This portion features the thoughts of DepEd 11 OIC Regional Director Nenita E. Lumaad, CSEE to all stakeholders and recipients of the efforts to improve the basic education) "You have to be familiar with all the programs and projects of our organization and you have to be accountable to each one. There should be sense of urgency in whatever you do.”

Success is never sweeter than after so many stumbling blocks in attaining it.

For one, he was not born with a silver platter. He admitted that his family is poor and without the help of the people who saw a myriad of stellar potentials in him, he would not have gone that far, and to be more apt, very, very far.

I am talking about Lloyd Montebon, a former student of Vicente Hizon Sr. ES and F. Bangoy NHS and now enrolled as Special Program in the Arts (SPA) student of Sta. Ana NHS, Division of Davao City, who had just won as Grand Champion of the Junior Edition of the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) held at Hollywood, California, USA on July 11-20, 2014.

Lloyd is under the tutelage of Director Arthur Zata of Talent Edge. Arthur did his best to make this happen as he is fully convinced that the teenager would reach that far even with his stature in life. He painstakingly nurtured the raw talent of Lloyd and with the help of the kid’s parents and relatives, they were able to squeeze out the best in him.

I could still remember watching him perform the hit song "Frozen" during the Araw ng Davao del Norte Thanksgiving Program. He even thanked that day’s Guest of Honor, Assistant Secretary and popular movie star Jose Sixto "Dingdong" Dantes III, the new Executive Director of the National Youth Commission for recognizing his talent and asking hi tom perform that day in the presence of the people of Davao del Norte headed by Gov. Rodolfo P. del Rosario and Rep. Anthony del Rosario of the First District and Rep. Anton Lagdameo of the Second District.

Since then, the Regional Office of DepEd headed by Director Nenita E. Lumaad and the men and women of the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD) headed by Dr. Luzminda O. Onor promised to help campaign for moral, spiritual and financial support for him.

The first stop was during the Regional K to 12 Training for Private Schools Grade 3 and 9 Teachers held at Felis Resort Complex in Matina Aplaya where PAPSCU President and Emar Environmental College owner Ma. Lita Montalban offered to shoulder Lloyd’s schooling up to college.

He was also supported by the people from the Division of Davao City and was brought to perform again during the Association of Regional Executive of National Agencies (Arena) Quarterly Flag Ceremony and again gained their support.

The rest is history. Lloyd had etched his mark at the prestigious international competition where Jed Madela, now a popular Kapamilya singer, was also a former champion. He has proven once again that poverty is not really a hindrance to success if one is really determined to reach it, no matter what.

This corner hopes that Lloyd will enliven again the sagging spirit of those who are beginning to lose hope and inspired those who have already found their potentials and are starting to hone them.

Congratulations Lloyd for that gigantic triumph. It is more than what you dream of.
