Sparing no quarters

I COULD say I’ve dutifully worked on myself and chipped off the bad while honing the good throughout my life. The very short temper of long ago now takes relatively greater stimuli to set off. But one trigger refuses to be toned down – good manners and right conduct.

Show me bad manners and expect war. A certain police officer had just had a taste of it last week, and all those who read about it should by now realize what I mean.

It’s sad really that ill manners prevail. Sadder because what we regarded as basic good manners and right conduct are now the exclusive realm of those whose parents knew responsible parenthood. It is saddest because from this very basic human behavior emanates everything. From good citizenship, to good relations, to the toning down if not the total obliteration of the ego and the corrupted sense of entitlement.

The ego. This is one enemy of society that the younger generation today have taken well under their wing. Thus we see them unmindful of how they behave, unmindful of the people around them and how their actions affect those. They will not even show a modicum of movement when you say excuse me. This is what we get when parents pander so much on the physical beauty, and the Facebook and Twitter produces more selfie-addicts.

It is all about the self, the me, the me, the me.

A few elder persons may have been a fault in our generation’s stars and thus have become the egoistic persons that they are now. But in the younger generation this has become the norm and not the fault. The fault is now in those who abide by basic good manners and right conduct and thus say excuse me and thank you, and really look where they are going and where the other people are going instead of sashaying down corridors and roads as if they own it and everyone else has to move aside, vehicles included.

Mindfulness seems to be a thing of the past. Slamming doors seem normal, shouting at your parent to get what you want only gets you a frown and a sssshhhh, that allows you to shout louder. Then these brats grow up to be the hairbrushing, duckfacing, selfie-ing crowd we all have now, all focused on the self and no one self. Notice how young women, all wearing their hair long, don’t even find it discourteous if their hair gets into your face all because they refuse to hold this down or tie it in a knot. Suggest that they tie this and they will roll their eyes in consternation, their puckered mouths shaped into a silent, “D-oh!”

For the unmindful, tying one’s hair has long been out of fashion. The message being: eat my hair or even get it all over your face, I don’t really care for as long as I am in fashion. This is reinforced by all those shampoo commercials that show girls flinging their hair like they own all the space in this world. There is definitely no regard for anyone else outside the self.

From there comes disregard for the rights and privileges of others, from there is the warped sense of entitlement. I deserve this, the uncouth young are now screaming, even if they do not lift a finger to earn anything. From there, we get the corrupt, the kawatan.

If you think what you are watching on the news today is infuriating, where a senator acts as if he truly deserves an air cooler in his detention room (take not it’s not even a jail cell but a room), all because he’s a senator and yes, an action star, wait till all these egoistic youths take over the government we have already allowed to be grossly corrupted.

As for me, just don’t ever dare cross my path with your false sense of entitlement and unmindful ways because I’m not going to hesitate to cut you down to size, no matter who you are. There is just so much ill manners this world should be allowed to take.
